Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Earth Sciences is looking to recruit a Teaching Fellow in Geology and Geochemistry to support teaching and development of undergraduate modules, in particular Introductory Geochemistry (GEOL 0008 - 1st year), as well as to provide support for foundation course The Earth (GEOL 0007 - 1st year), field courses, postgraduate research projects and other enabling roles to be agreed with the department.

The main role of the Teaching Fellow will be to deliver geology and geochemistry-related teaching to undergraduate students. This will include the deliver of the first year Introductory Geochemistry course and to contribute to the first year foundation module 'The Earth'.

Within the framework of the agreed programme, the successful candidate will develop and design teaching materials including hand-outs and course work and other work related to curriculum development as well as challenge students’ thinking and foster debates to develop the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking.

The successful candidate will plan, lecture, tutor and assist students as appropriate to classes of various sizes, mixed ability and backgrounds.

The post is for 10 months in the first instance


Key Requirements

Candidates will have a PhD or thesis submitted subject to examination an Earth Sciences/geology-related subject (viva must have taken place by the start date of the post).

Experience of assisting with teaching at undergraduate and/or Masters levels, supervision of undergraduate projects and experience with object-based and problem-based learning techniques is essential.

Good written and verbal communication skills, the ability to present information effectively to a range of audiences and the ability to meet deadlines is essential, as is the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
