Job summary

The Department of Mathematics wishes to appoint a Teaching Fellow in Pure Mathematics, to be in post as soon as possible. This is a fixed term contract, ending on 30 June 2021.

Duties and responsibilities

Your main duties will be to support on-line delivery of the Department’s curriculum and to deliver teaching of pure mathematics modules for the Department. Support for on-line delivery will involve liaison between the Department’s Remote Teaching Committees, Learning Technologists within the College and the Educational Development Unit.

You will assist with the development of innovative forms of learning and teaching material within the Department, suitable for delivery both remotely and on-site. Teaching associated to the post includes the delivery of modules to both mathematics undergraduates and MSc level students, and ancillary pure mathematics modules.

You will also provide teaching cover for lectures and classes taught by the Pure Section of the Department of Mathematics. You will also carry out personal tutoring and project supervision work within the Department of Mathematics.

Essential requirements

 You will must an MSc degree (or equivalent) with a substantial Mathematics components and have completed or be nearing completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Mathematics. 

You will also have, or be working towards, a recognised teaching qualification, or be able to demonstrate experience in a formal teaching environment.

You must also meet the following criteria:

  • Specialist knowledge of Pure Mathematics, or closely related field, and of teaching methods and techniques, especially online, within the field of mathematics
  • Have recent experience and proven competence of teaching or tutoring in Pure Mathematics at an undergraduate level
  • Be able to demonstrate the potential to teach Mathematics effectively and enthusiastically at an undergraduate level
  • Have experience of promoting effective learning and interaction with students, especially online, together with an ability to motivate mathematics students in the study of Pure Mathematics.

The ability to contribute to the research profile of the Department is highly desirable.
