Job summary

The Department of Mathematics is currently seeking a Teaching Fellow in Statistics.

Duties and responsibilities

Your main duties will be to deliver activities for the Statistics and Machine Learning teaching in the Department. The department provides such teaching for its undergraduate Mathematics programme, and two masters level programmes, one of which is taught fully online.

In addition to delivering modules on these programmes, you will assist with the development of innovative forms of pedagogy within the Department. You will provide teaching cover for up to ten hours a week of lectures and classes taught by the Statistics Section of the Department of Mathematics.  You will also carry out personal tutoring and project supervision work within the Department of Mathematics.

Essential requirements

  • Have completed (or are nearing completion of) a PhD (or equivalent) in Statistics or Mathematics
  • To have, or to be working towards, a recognised teaching qualification, or to be able to demonstrate experience in a formal teaching environment
  • Have potential for and willingness to work towards appropriate professional recognition and accreditation e.g. Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA)
  • Recent experience and proven competence of teaching or tutoring in Statistics, Machine learning, or related data analysis content, at an undergraduate level
  • Recent experience of teaching or tutoring in statistics, and an ability to demonstrate the potential to teach university level Mathematics effectively and enthusiastically at an introductory undergraduate level. Experience of promoting effective learning and interaction with students
  • A specialist knowledge of statistics, or closely related field, and of teaching methods and techniques within the field of mathematics.
  • Familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess teaching
  • Experience of and a demonstrable ability to teach up to MSc level effectively in a variety of teaching situations
