Subject Description

Biological diversity addresses the variation in the earth's myriad of organisms (systematic taxa or populations) which may include their functional, genetic, taxonomic and geographical variation. In research on biodiversity, for example, phylogenetic relationships between life forms, environmental factors that promote the emergence of diversity and / or how diversity itself affects the functioning of ecosystems are investigated. The department carries out internationally outstanding research in the subject. In connection with the department is the Gothenburg Global Biodiversity Center (www.ggbc.gu.se) which coordinates research and other activities in biodiversity and conservation biology. Through this center there is access to several large biological collections that span several parts of the tree of life and represent large parts of the world.

 

Duties

We are seeking a university lecturer in the field to strengthen biodiversity research. The duties include teaching and developing an independent research program in biodiversity. The research should be in line with the department's focus and you are expected to develop collaborations with other research groups and centers within the department. You are expected to apply for external research grants, build up and lead a research group, and supervise doctoral students. The duties include teaching at the undergraduate and advanced levels in primarily the biology programs, but also within eg the environmental science program. The teaching takes place in both Swedish and English. You are primarily expected to teach biodiversity at the basic and advanced levels. This includes teaching about basic systematics and biodiversity. In addition to lectures and exercises, the course leader is also responsible. The assignments also include supervising thesis work at the basic and advanced levels in biology and environmental science education. As part of a larger teaching team, you are expected to take an active part in the development and renewal of teaching both in content and form. Furthermore, you are expected to participate in the department's activities through administrative assignments. You should collaborate with the surrounding community, both in collaborative projects and in popular science activities. As part of a larger teaching team, you are expected to take an active part in the development and renewal of teaching both in content and form. Furthermore, you are expected to participate in the department's activities through administrative assignments. You should collaborate with the surrounding community, both in collaborative projects and in popular science activities. As part of a larger teaching team, you are expected to take an active part in the development and renewal of teaching both in content and form. Furthermore, you are expected to participate in the department's activities through administrative assignments. You should collaborate with the surrounding community, both in collaborative projects and in popular science activities.

You who do not have a higher education pedagogical education may undergo such within two years from admission to employment. The university offers college pedagogical courses.

You are expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years. The university offers courses in Swedish.

 

Competence

Eligibility for employment as a teacher is specified in Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg's own employment scheme.

Eligible to be employed as a university lecturer is the person who has completed a doctoral degree in a relevant subject and who has demonstrated pedagogical skills. Ability to teach in Swedish or English is also a requirement.

 

Basis of Assessment

In the appointment, special emphasis will be placed on scientific and pedagogical skills that are equally weighted in the assessment. Skills in research must be documented through scientific publishing, contributions to conferences, the ability to obtain external research funding and experience in research supervision. Skills in teaching should be documented through experience of academic teaching and supervision including authoring of teaching materials and the like. Applicants' personal qualities in being able to work internally and externally to perform the described tasks will be taken into account in assessing the suitability of the employment. In addition, skills in collaborating with the surrounding community and informing research and development work nationally and internationally should be taken into account.

In summary, in the case of teacher recruitment, the applicant must be selected who, after a comprehensive assessment of skill and development potential, is considered to have the best conditions for carrying out the tasks included in the employment, cooperating with other staff and contributing to a positive development of the business. The weighted assessment will also include how the applicant's qualifications and plans complement and strengthen the business in accordance with the institution's strategy.
