Subject Description

Linguistics is a subject with degree rights at all levels, including postgraduate education. It can be included as the main area in both the bachelor's and master's and master's degrees. 

Linguistics is part of the Communicator Program with a focus on government and public administration as well as in the Master in Language Technology program. 

In the research, an overall theme is linguistic interaction, and the focus is on the areas, phonetics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, semantics and pragmatics as well as language technology / computer linguistics. 

The department also has The Center for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability (CLASP) funded by a ten-year grant from the Swedish Research Council (2015-2025).

 

Duties

We are looking for a linguist specialized in communication in organizations (such as organizational communication, strategic communication and culture and communication) and who can strengthen the institution's competence in the communicator program with a focus on authorities and public administration.  

The duties include teaching and research. Teaching takes place mainly within the Communicator Program with a focus on authorities and public administration at the advanced level, but also in linguistics at the basic, advanced and doctoral levels. The teaching is mainly conducted in Swedish and for examinations at the advanced level at the Faculty of Humanities, lecturer competence is normally required.

The research is expected to be conducted in linguistics and be relevant to the Communicator Program. In the application, the applicant shall decide on how his own research can promote and deepen cooperation with the subject's overall theme (linguistic interaction) as mentioned above. 

The holder of the employment is expected to be physically present at the department and contribute to its entire operations. Other types of assignments may also occur within the framework of the employment. 

 

Competence

Eligible for the position are those who have completed their doctoral degree in linguistics or equivalent and have shown pedagogical skills.

According to the University of Gothenburg's employment scheme, applicants who do not have higher education pedagogical education of at least 15 higher education credits, and who are also not deemed to have acquired equivalent knowledge in other ways, must undergo such training during the first year of employment.

 

Basis of Assessment

When appointing, emphasis will be placed on scientific and pedagogical skills equally. Since teaching is to take place within the Communication Program, which focuses on communication in organizations, research and teaching experience that can be included under this description is sought. Experience from management assignments as well as documented experience of collaboration with the surrounding community is a merit.

Assessment bases for employment as an associate professor are set out in Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg's own employment scheme, according to which the applicant must be selected who, after a comprehensive assessment of skill and development potential, is considered to have the best conditions for performing the tasks included in the employment.

In assessing the scientific skill, weight is attached, in addition to scientific publications in international journals, also to the demonstrated ability to lead and develop research and the demonstrated ability to obtain research funding from both national and international donors.

We are committed to ensuring that the employee is able to contribute to the environment, both scientifically and pedagogically, and to have the personal qualities necessary to be able to collaborate internally and externally to drive development within the subject. Documented ability to plan, implement, evaluate and develop subject-relevant teaching, including tutoring, both independently and through supervision is also a merit. 

The communication program's teaching is primarily conducted in Swedish. Thus, good knowledge of Swedish, or Norwegian or Danish, is highly merited. 

In addition to expert review, test lectures and interviews may also form the basis for assessment. In addition, reference taking may be applied.
