The Faculty is also a significant international community of research, education and culture.
The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of

University Lecturer of Nordic Studies

for a fixed term from 1 January to 31 December 2022 (locum tenens). There is a six-month trial period for the position.

Nordic studies belongs to the discipline of area and cultural studies and is part of the Centre for Nordic Studies (CENS). The discipline examines how people living in a specific area experience the world, organise their society in a coherent way and see themselves as sharing a culture. In addition, the mission of CENS is to promote critical research on the Nordic countries, examining how they are perceived and understood by the global community, and which elements constitute the Nordic identity in both space and time.

The duties of the university lecturer of Nordic studies include the provision of master’s level teaching, the supervision and examination of theses, as well as the conduct of research in the field and participation in the further development of the discipline. Duties requiring good cooperation skills include participating in the planning and development of teaching together with the other staff of the department, degree programmes and discipline.

APPOINTMENT CRITERIA

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a university lectureship must hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses.

When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention will be paid to academic qualifications and merits, such as publications and experience of research projects, as well as teaching and supervision experience, pedagogical skills, the ability to produce learning material and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills. The university lecturer must be proficient in Swedish (or another relevant Scandinavian language) because part of the appointee’s teaching and supervision duties are included in a Swedish-language module. The successful completion of the duties of the position also requires a good command of English as well as the ability to provide teaching and supervise theses in English within the Master’s Programme in European and Nordic Studies. Other language skills relevant to Nordic studies will be considered a merit, as will research and teaching experience suitable for the profile of CENS and the ReNEW consortium managed by CENS.

SALARY

The appointee’s gross monthly salary will range from €3,300 to €4,500, depending on their qualifications and experience. There is a six-month trial period for the position.
