Position description

The UC Davis Department of Neurology is recruiting a Vice Chair of Research at the Associate or Full Professor level in the Regular, In Residence or Clinical X series.

The Vice Chair of Research will provide leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight of the department’s research programs and activities with a focus on the growth and sustainability of the department’s research portfolio.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Vice Chair of Research will collaborate with department and University leadership to insure an innovative and entrepreneurial-oriented culture focused on high-quality clinical, basic, and translational research. The position requires strong leadership and management skills related to developing operational effectiveness, advising on research priorities, strategic planning, funding needs, IRB submission, budgeting, etc.

The Vice Chair of Research will provide guidance and mentorship to all levels of faculty; recruit and retain high potential research faculty; support and expand student involvement in research at all levels in partnership with the Vice Chair of Education; develop strategies to enhance communication and collaboration in partnership with the department Chair; and create an environment that values and supports research programs. This position will serve as a liaison between departmental leadership, research leaders at the School of Medicine, and research leaders across campus to identify best practices and additional opportunities for multidisciplinary interactions.

As an Academic Senate faculty member responsibilities include: clinical service in the area of specialty, as applicable; teaching to medical students, residents, and fellows; conducting and producing scholarly work, clinical/translational research; a record of peer-reviewed publications; success in obtaining extramural funding, as applicable; and University service. Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• MD, PhD, or MD/PhD with at least 5 years of experience in successful leadership of research programs. For MD applicants’ additional requirements include, board-certification and fellowship training as applicable to specialty and if subspecialty trained and possess or be eligible for a California Medical License.
• Strong interpersonal skills, the capacity to work collaboratively and effectively with others, experience managing space and financial resources, and an ability to inspire colleagues and staff to achieve excellent results.
• Successful, sustained, and impactful track record of high-impact scholarship and independent grant funding.
• History of successful mentorship of junior faculty.
• Accomplished academic record to meet the criteria of Associate or Full Professor level faculty appointment at the University of California.
• Evidence of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with developing and/or leading research training programs.
• Significant experience obtaining and administering extramural funding from a range of sponsors.
• Experience with a range of basic, translational and clinical research and types of study designs and research methods.
• Experience with philanthropic development for research.
